Autumn/Winter 2013

Wow we really packed in the activities in the Autumn/Winter term for Serenade. We started by welcoming our new Musical Director – Tom Stanyard. We then practiced hard for our second concert with the Loughborough Concert Band in October, which was a great success and got us off to a great start raising money for the two chosen charities for this year: Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance. We have given ourselves a really ambitious target for fundraising this year and as well as our concerts we have been baking cakes, selling second-hand books, raffle and published our very own recipe book – yum.

After the October concert we were into the Christmas spirit busy preparing for our Christmas Concert. For the first time ever we had some smaller groups of our Serenadies performing as well as the main choir. We also had a notable performance from the St Botolph’s School Choir, the children were amazing and really brought a family feel to the concert. We also managed to strong-arm our new Musical Director, Tom, to perform a solo for us, and play the organ for that truly Christmas feel to the concert. A large percentage of this year’s concert was in harmony, so a lot of hard work.

As well as the two main events we also managed to fit in a tour of the local nursing homes, to sing them some carols, which was a very rewarding experience. Opened the Holy Cross Christmas Fayre. Some of our industrious members decorated a Serenade tree for the Christmas Tree Competition. Plus we sang at The Crown for their beer festival. Oh and performed at the Smart and Sparkle event. Wow, all that makes me tired just reading it. So a great term for us, with some notable firsts, so we are still pushing ourselves to improve. We are looking forward to the next term, but only after a well-deserved break.P1010102
